Request HSRN Connectivity
Requesting Fiber to the Desk
For more details on connecting via fiber, see the documentation page. These are the general onboarding procedure:
- A researcher fills out the HSRN onboarding form to request a new fiber distribution box.
- A consultation call is scheduled with Research Technology Services.
- Necessary equipment is procured.
- Fiber distribution box is installed (if not already in place).
- Device network cards are installed into the end-PCs.
- Device drivers are configured.
- Machines are connected to the network.
For 100 Gbps fiber connections, the cost is generally:
- $2,500 for fiber connection and a fiber distribution box unless it is already present. Contact us to see if we placed one in your lab already.
- $1000 per machine for a 100Gbps network card, transceiver, and fiber (see our recommendation here).
Requesting Ethernet Port Upgrades
For more details on upgrades to traditional Ethernet ports, see the documentation page. These are the general onboarding procedure:
- Recommended equipment is procured and installed into end-PCs.
- A researcher fills out the HSRN onboarding form to request changing a port from NYU-NET to the HSRN AND provide the MAC Address of the target PC.
- The network jack is switched by NYU network technicians behind the wall, which will happen without disruption or access to your room.
- Machines are connected to the network.
For 10Gbps Ethernet port upgrades, the cost is generally:
-
$500 for Copper cabling between the outlet and the network. Many newer buildings may already have this infrastructure in place, in which case the switch will be at no cost. The HSRN team can assist in this determination.
-
$100 for a 10Gbps Network Interface Card (see our recommendation here). Devices with a slower Network Interface Card already installed will still be able to connect but will be bottlenecked at that speed.
Requesting High Speed Wi-Fi
For more details on this connection type, see the documentation page. These are the general onboarding procedure:
- A researcher fills out the HSRN onboarding form to request a new Wi-Fi access point.
- A consultation call is scheduled with Research Technology Services.
- Recommended equipment is procured.
- The access point is installed and configured.
- Machines are connected to the network.
For Wi-Fi connections, the cost is generally: - $2000 for the access point. - $500 for wiring in some older buildings.
New Building Requests
Bringing HSRN connectivity to new buildings requires the installation of a fiber backbone, as well as specialized hardware and equipment. If you are interested in bringing HSRN to your building, please have your department chair submit a request to the NYU Faculty Advisory Board.
