Network Configuration

Overview

This guide covers how to setup system networking for usage on the HSRN.

The HSRN team requires the MAC Address of ALL computers before networking can be enabled. Please use the HSRN Onboarding form to provide us with your MAC Address(es). Please see the following assistance guide to find this on your platform.

Workstations

General workstations which act as clients will receive a dynamic IP over DHCP. After the HSRN confirms that the MAC Address of the computer is authorized, simply plug into the port and begin using the HSRN.

Workstation addresses are reachable via the NYU VPN. However, these addresses should be considered non-persistent.

Servers

Servers which provide networked services will receive a static IP, delivered over DHCP (Static-DHCP). After the HSRN confirms that the MAC Address of the computer is authorized, simply plug into the port and begin using the HSRN. The only difference to workstations is that the first IP you are given after plugging in will be fixed to the MAC, and will persist across restarts.

Please inform us of any inter-building movement of servers as networking configuration will need to change.

HSRN Static IP addresses are reachable from the NYU VPN.

Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI)

Intelligent Platform Management Interfaces (IPMI) typically come with rackable servers and higher-end equipment. The motivation for these devices is for you to remotely manage the system as if you were next to it, such as powering it on/off, accessing a "virtual console", etc which you are typically unable to do through SSH or remote desktop access.

When connecting servers to the HSRN, we would typically provision an additional ethernet connection for IPMI. Please reach out to us if you require an additional ethernet connection.

You will typically need to set up these devices through the BIOS or initial configuration of your machine. Please see your device user manual for exact details. Once you are ready, please reach out to the HSRN for the following network details:

  • Static IP for IPMI
  • Gateway for IPMI

HSRN IPMI addresses are NOT reachable via the standard NYU VPN. You will need to access them through the HSRN VPN.

Domain Names (DNS)

Domain names will be assigned to computers receiving Static-DHCP addresses under the hsrn.nyu.edu zone. If you would like to have a domain name from your school or department point to your server on the HSRN, please email hostmaster@nyu.edu and ask to create a CNAME record between the hsrn.nyu.edu record and your intended record.
