Add a Device to the HSRN
Overview
This guide covers how to add a device to the HSRN after a connection point has been created.
Add a Device to Wired (Ethernet Port Upgrade or Fiber)
This section goes over how to add a device to the HSRN. Please use the HSRN Onboarding Form to provide us all necessary details.
MAC Addresses
The HSRN team requires the MAC Address of computers connecting via wired before networking is enabled. Please see the following assistance guide to find this on your platform. Your PC may have multiple network cards, please view the details to ensure that you are providing the MAC Address of the correct network card.
IP Types
Static IPs are the default option for devices on the HSRN. The device will have an IP that does not change, allowing you to connect to the device remotely through the IP. Please inform us of any inter-building movement of servers as the networking configuration will need to change.
Out-of-band management software typically comes with rackable servers and higher-end equipment. While most devices on the HSRN are reachable from NYU-NET, out-of-band management addresses are only accessible from HSRN to increase security. Therefore they will receive a static IP address only accessible to the HSRN. In your motherboard's BIOS menu select the DHCP
option for IPMI networking (this may be the default). Then record the MAC address of the IPMI device as required in the form. Consult your motherboard's manual for details.
Dynamic IPs are best suited for devices that do not need to be managed remotely, but may need to move geographically. Examples may be laptops, cameras, etc that communicate outbound or function as "clients" as opposed to "servers." You simply need to plug the device into any HSRN-enabled port and it will be connected. Note: The IP address of your device may change. If you need to reach the device you can refer to the domain name.
Domain Names
To request a domain name for the device, enter the name into the DNS section of the form. We will add the name to the *.hsrn.nyu.edu
record (IE: example.hsrn.nyu.edu).
If you would like a custom domain name such as one from your department, please provide us the fully qualified domain name (FDQN). Our team will create a request with hostmaster@nyu.edu to request a CNAME
record with this provided domain name in the desired zone.
Add a Device to HSRN Wireless
Simply connect to HSRN Wireless via the Pre-Shared Key and the device will connect immediately. Please contact us if you do not have the key.
Validate a Computer is on HSRN
The next page, System Identification provides a tool to identify which network a device is on through text at the top of the page. You can use this to verify the connection of a device.
